Al Jumail

Al Jumail, an abandoned fishing and pearling village in northeastern Qatar, was founded in the 19th century and was inhabited until the 20th century, before the economic boom brought by the oil and gas industry. The town’s name comes from the Arabic word “jameel”, meaning “beautiful”, a reference to the trees that grow in the region all year round. According to Wikipedia, in the 1820s, George Barnes Brucks was commissioned to prepare the first British survey of the Persian Gulf and he documented Al Jumail in that survey, calling it “Yamale”.
